BACKGROUND
The
word INDUS is an acronym for India and the U.S.A.
Indus Hospital is a 90 bed self-supporting, no-profit
no-loss unit, which was conceived as a project of
philanthropy by Dr. Balak R.Verma in the memory of
his beloved parents Shri Jindu Ram Verma & Smt.
Purbu Devi Verma who expired in 1981 and 1985 respectively.
They inspired him to study Science and excel in life
despite their modest means and being illiterate.

He
was joined by his wife Dr. Indira Verma and encouraged
by their personal friends as well as some institutions
in the United States of America who provided valuable
material help to equip the Indus Hospital with modern
technology. The land and edifice were financed by
Dr. Vermas out of their personal savings while working
in the United States of America. Having worked there
for 27 long years and after reaching the zenith of
their professional career , both of them continue
to serve the Hospital as Medical Missionaries without
receiving anything in return from the Hospital, the
patients or the vendors, either directly or indirectly.
The Institution is governed by the Indus Medical Foundation
which is under the Societies Registration Act of 1860,
in India.
 The
ground-breaking ceremony for the Hospital Building
was performed by the then Hon'ble Chief Minister of
Himachal Pradesh, Raja Virbhadra Singh on July 01,
1983. Ownership Deed of the Hospital was conveyed
to Indus Medical Foundation, Shimla, through a perpetual
Leasehold Agreement for a nominal consideration of
Re.1 (Rupee One only) per annum by Dr. Balak R.Verma
for public use through the then Hon'ble Chief Minister
of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Shanta Kumar on July 06,
1991. The Hospital was dedicated to the people of
India by the then Hon'ble Governor of Himachal Pradesh,
Shri Bali Ram Bhagat, on June 13, 1993
Members
of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation are elected
from different walks of life, based on their inclination
and outstanding track record for philanthropic community
service. They serve the organization without any financial
consideration.
Indus is a living testimony
to the spirit of dedication and sacrifice and stands
to inspire those who care for the welfare of other
people. It strives to Introduce a Paradigm Shift and
Uncompromised Quality Assurance in Health Care at
affordable costs in a developing country, like India.
