It
is believed that the name Shimla is derived from the
word Shyamla, yet
another appellation for the Hindu goddess Kali whose
temple was once located just above the present Indus
Hospital.
Shimla town, perhaps one
of the biggest hill stations of the world , was founded
in 1816-17 in the North West Himalayas by the British
colonialists. Once upon a time, from the Red Sea in
the West to the Straits of Moluccas in the East, the
entire British empire was ruled from Shimla which constituted
the capital of the Empire during the Summer Seasons.
